This book is a substantially revised version of my publication, Riverside Jazz Records, published in 1984. The previous edition mainly covered modern jazz records centering on the Contemporary 12” and Jazzland 12" Series, based on the reissues at that time by Japan Victor Company (JVC). As I found jazz fans who were dissatisfied with the discography not covering the years before the modern jazz era, I decided to enhance the previous edition by researching the Archive Series (10” and 12” albums) and some 40 albums on RCA Victor's Label “X,” which Keepnews produced, and reading the 40-plus issues of The Record Changer magazine (1945 to early 1950) and A Pictorial History Of Jazz published by Keepnews and Grauer (Crown Publishing, 1955), The View From Within by Keepnews (Oxford Press, 1988), etc. The research included timing each track during actual listening and intensive reading of all the liner notes available. I also researched as many reissues and compilation albums as possible.
